MESSAGE FROM ROCKABILLY REV UP ORGANIZERS:
Now, more than ever, we have become acutely aware of the fact that not condoning racism is just not enough. We need to use our voices and whatever platform we have to stand as allies and supporters of our fellow humans who deal with injustice on a daily basis simply because of their skin colour.
It is easy to feel helpless and to assume that what small thing we can do won’t make much of a difference, but we believe that many, acting together, can make a big difference.
As members of the pinup & rockabilly community, we love vintage culture. However, we are aware that there is a cross-section of this community that would like to hold on to ALL the old values, even those that we strongly disagree with.
Use of the Confederate Flag on clothing and in band merchandising or album art is one glaring example of this.
It is time to send a clear message that there is no room for this bigotry in our community!
In recent years we have been heartened to see large rockabilly events ban racist imagery and turn down bands that continue to use the Confederate Flag.
We want to make it clear that our event, Rockabilly Rev Up, which takes place annually in Port Dover, is a welcome space for all who want to raise each other up. We will not allow racist imagery at our event.
In support of this decision and in an effort to make a tangible difference in our community, 100% of the profit from the sale of the Rockabilly Rev Up Tees will be donated to the Nia Centre, a Toronto based organization committed to promoting the arts among the black community.
